Discipline and why you'll fail without it.

Generally people have two processes to reach their goals.

1. they go hard, see results quickly, go harder, burnout and are back to where they started.

2. they set small achievable goals, commit for a couple of weeks, see 0 results, quit and are back to where they started.

I used to promote the concept of picking low laying fruit for reaching your goals. This means that if you have a goal break it up into small, easily reachable steps, then celebrating those, with each easy step building on the last to reach the big hard to reach goal.

But also the low laying fruit can be easy to find excuses for when we aren't seeing instantaneous results. So you can see having the best plan, seeing results or reaching mini milestones doesn't always get us the results we want.

So this is why I want to talk about discipline.

"Discipline is the ability to pursue something despite how tempting it may be to abandon it."

Discipline is not only applicable to the choices we make about the goals we set. It's a choice we need to make with every decision we make.

Are you choosing to exercise, practice discipline for 1 hour or are you going to make an excuse and feel terrible for the next 24 hours?

Are you going to pre plan your meals, and eat the apple even when you want a chocolate bar or are you going to make an excuse and be happy for 5 mins and terrible for the next 24 hours?

Are you going to put away your things as you go practicing discipline as you move through your day, or are you going to leave everything out then use it as an excuse to not work on your goals and feel terrible for the next 24 hours?

You can see where I am going with this.

Goals with clear stepping stones are ideal, but not always necessary if you have a goal.

Practicing discipline is.

You can set a goal, break it down into bite sized pieces so you don't feel overwhelmed, but ultimately practicing discipline every single day, even after you've reached your goal is going to change your life.

I'd love to hear if you already have discipline perfected in your life, or if it's something you're going to implement moving forward?
